CHAPMANVILLE — The Chapmanville Regional High School boys’ basketball team finally broke out of its scoring funk on Friday night in the first round of Chapmanville’s Bob Runyon Memorial Holiday Tournament at the CRHS gym.

The Tigers neared the century mark and routed the Class A county rival Man Hillbillies 94-44 to advance to Saturday night’s tournament championship game.

Mackenzie Martin erupted for 30 points as the Tigers improved to 2-3 on the season.

Through Chapmanville’s first four games, the Tigers had only averaged 41 points per contest.

In its last game, Chapmanville only managed 29 points in a 32-29 loss at home to the Poca Dots in Cardinal Conference action.

On Friday night, however, it was a different story.

Michael Hurst also had a good game for the Tigers as he tossed in 16 points.

Kenny Plumley also broke into double digits in scoring for Chapmanville as he contributed 14 points.

Freshman guard John Thomas Keffer led Man (1-3) with a team-high 23 points.

The Tigers also got 12 points from Denver Adkins, eight from Brady Cox, four from Tyler Bailey, three from Zac Casto and two each from Trey Dalton, Jon Williamson and Joe Tackett. Nate Ramey chipped in with one point.

Man got eight points from Jake Adkins, five from Chris Justice, three from Kenny Joe Adkins, two from Joe Caudill and one from Clay Brumfield.

Chapmanville, coached by first-year mentor Allan Hatcher, jumped out to a 28-6 lead after the first quarter of play and never looked back. The Tigers outscored Man 25-12 in the second to take a commanding 53-18 lead. An 18-14 fourth quarter edge by the Tigers put CRHS on top 71-32 after three. Chapmanville then outscored the Billies 23-12 in the last period as both teams emptied its benches.

Martin outscored the entire Man team 14-6 in the first quarter, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer which put the Tigers ahead by 22.

The Tigers were scheduled to play Pikeview in Saturday night’s tourney championship game. Pikeview beat Mount View 50-49 in the opener. Man was set to take on Mount View in the consolation game.

Chapmanville and Man have a rematch on Wednesday at Man. Tipoff is 7:30 p.m.
