PIKEVILLE - Betsy Layne finished runner-up in the 60th Annual Pikeville Invitational Tournament on Saturday night, falling to a Louisville foe in the title tilt. Louisville Collegiate pulled away to defeat the Bobcats 72-50 in the championship game.

Louisville Collegiate claimed its fifth win in seven games, moving to 8-3 overall.

Betsy Layne dropped to 9-3 after suffering the loss. The Bobcats had won four straight games and notched seven wins in their last eight outings.

After defeating Highlands in the opening round and outlasting 14th Region title contender Breathitt County in overtime in the semifinals, Betsy Layne was limited against Collegiate.

The Bobcats shot 32.1 percent (18-of-56) from the field. Betsy Layne was five-of-16 (31.3 percent) from 3-point range.

The Bobcats finished nine-for-20 (45 percent) from the free throw line in the championship contest.

Collegiate rolled throughout the tournament. The Titans toppled Middlesboro and Spencer County in earlier matchups.

Peyton Case, Dylan Hamilton and Garran Newsome led Betsy Layne with 10 points apiece.

Finishing one shot short of double figures, Dustin Rogers added eight points or the Bobcats.

Dylan Meade was held to five points while Dalton Maldonado scored three and Lako Daniels and Aaron Rogers chipped in two apiece for Betsy Layne in the setback.

Newsome and Rogers each hit a pair of 3-pointers for the Bobcats.

Betsy Layne had 17 turnovers opposed to only eight assists.

Hamilton, Case and Meade represented Betsy Layne on the All-Tournament Team.

In other Pikeville Invitational Tournament games played on Saturday it was Highlands 62, Middlesboro 48; Harlan County 66, Pikeville 63 in overtime and Breathitt County 62, Spencer County 58.

The Bobcats will visit 58th District/Floyd County Conference rival Piarist School for a game on Wednesday. Betsy Layne is preparing to defend its title in the 15th Region All “A” Classic. The Bobcats are scheduled to play South Floyd Friday night at 8 p.m. in the opening round of the 15th Region small-school regional boys’ basketball tournament.
