Prestonsburg finished runner-up to 14th Region title contender Leslie County in its invitational tournament held last week.

PRESTONSBURG - The Prestonsburg Lady Blackcats made up some ground last week. Prestonsburg, under the guidance of first-year head coach April Newsome, notched its first win in the 2012-13 season and eventually claimed a second victory en route to a runner-up finish in its own tournament.

The Lady Blackcats finished runner-up to Leslie County in the Prestonsburg Christmas Tournament.

Following an impressive opening round win over 15th Region rival Phelps, Prestonsburg pulled off an upset victory over Morgan County in the second round of the holiday tournament. The Lady Blackcats compiled a 2-1 record in their tournament.

East Ridge, Wolfe County, Morgan County and Menifee County also competed in the Prestonsburg Christmas Tournament.

Prestonsburg is due back in action at home on Saturday versus Buckhorn. Tip-off for the Prestonsburg-Buckhorn girls’ basketball game is set for 7:30 p.m.

After visiting Pike County Central on Jan. 10 and hosting South Floyd one day later, Prestonsburg will open play in the 15th Region All “A” Classic on Monday, Jan. 14. The Lady Blackcats will face the winner of a game that matches up Pikeville versus Allen Central.
