Kevin Gertz has definitely got the Logan High School girls’ basketball team heading in the right direction.
Going into the 2013 portion of the 2012-13 prep basketball season, the Lady Cats stand at 4-2 overall.
After a bit of a bumpy 1-2 start, Logan has won three straight games. The biggest win of all was back on Dec. 13 when Logan went to Huntington and beat the Highlanders 56-55 to notch the school’s first ever victory over HHS in girls’ basketball history.
Logan then went on to score home wins over Capital (49-31) on Dec. 15 and Tolsia (51-41) on Dec. 18.
After a long 17-day Christmas break layoff the Lady Cats hope they haven’t lost their edge.
That’s because Logan’s biggest challenge awaits on Friday as the Lady Cats have a huge home showdown with Class AAA No. 1-ranked Morgantown (5-1).
Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Logan’s Willie Akers Arena.
Morgantown lost 49-41 at University on Dec. 18 to break a five-game winning streak to open the season. The Lady Mohigans opened the season with wins over Brooke (67-21), Preston (44-31), Spring Valley (67-49), Wheeling Park (51-38) and Bridgeport (59-28).
Morgantown has a rich girls’ basketball tradition having won Class AAA state championships in 2005 and 2007.
The Lady Mohigans, coached by Adam Henkins, are led by their eight senior players — Tiara Ireland (5-7), Leah Taylor (5-4), Alicia Golden (5-3), Caroline Colombo (5-8), Haley Holloway (5-9), Emily Sabatino (5-6), Ashley Holloway (5-8) and Allison Thompson (6-2).
Morgantown has added size with 5-10 junior Madison Thompson and 5-10 sophomore Brie Giuliani.
Logan is led by a pair of underclassmen — 5-11 sophomore all-state guard Shayna Gore and 6-2 freshman center Monica Mitchell.
Mitchell has come on strong for the Lady Cats recently and has given Logan an inside presence. Mitchell poured in 20 points in the Lady Cats’ win over Tolsia. She tossed in 12 of her points — most on short glassers inside the paint — in the fourth quarter as Logan turned a 37-35 deficit into a 10-point victory.
Other key players for Logan are 5-5 sophomore guard Kyra Cline, senior guard Hannah Tothe, 5-10 senior forward Jenna Kimler and senior twins Kelsey and Katie Kirk.
Morgantown has won six Class AAA state championships in its history, also taking crowns in 1993, 1992, 1990 and 1977. The Lady Mohigans have been state runner-ups four times.
