In observance of his birthday, the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Williamson Branch of the NAACP and Youth Council will host a program at 3 p.m., Jan. 13, at the Logan Street First Baptist Church in Williamson.

Keynote speaker for the event will be Dr. Carolyn L. Stuart, Executive Director of the Herbert H. Henderson Office of Minority Affairs. Appointed by Gov. Tomblin in August, Stuart’s office deal with issues affecting minorities and funds program that work to serve the needs of minority groups.

A native of McDowell County, Dr. Stuart received a Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences from Bluefield State College, a Masters of Arts in counseling from Marshall and a Ph. D in Counselor Education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute.

Various persons from the community will participate in the program, the invocation will be by the Rev. Michael Bostic, Pastor of the Chattaroy Church of God.

The focus of the MLK Center for Non-Violent Change is “Remember! Celebrate! Act! King’s Dream for our World” as this marks the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s “I have a Dream” speech and march on Washington.

The theme of the West Virginia’s MLK Holiday Commission is “Let us be Judged by the Content of our Character: within our CharACTer is the courage to ACT.”

Other speakers at the event will include Williamson Mayor Darrin McCormick, Chris Gray, Business Manager at Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College.

The program and those upcoming in observance of Black History month and “Harmony 365” are sponsored by local branches of the NAACP and SWVCTC.

Harmony 365 is a partnership between the College, the Southern Foundation, the Williamson Branch and the Logan Chapter of the NAACP and the West Virginia Humanities Council.

A reception will follow the program sponsored by SWVCTC and the NAACP. John Fullen, President of the Williamson NAACP, invites the public to attend the program. For more information, call 304 235-3268.
