Austin Vance playing well at Shawnee State
PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – Former Tug Valley all-state athlete Austin Vance is still playing well at Shawnee State University which is located in Portsmouth, Ohio.
Vance, who is a 5-11 sophomore, is a versatile guard for the Bears.
Vance saw plenty of playing time last year as a freshman and started several games at point guard. He has started 10 games this season and has played both point guard and shooting guard.
He is currently averaging about four points per game, a couple of assists and steals and has pulled down 15 rebounds for the season.
“I like it there,” Vance said of Shawnee State. “I have a good coach and great teammates.”
“It was good to get another semester under my belt,” he said, while watching his old team Tug Valley during the Christmas break. “My goal is to get my degree.”
“The talent level is very good in college,” Vance added. “Everyone you play has some great players. It is a lot different than high school.”
Vance is majoring in Chemistry and hopes to get into a pharmacy school after graduation from Shawnee State.
He is one of only five players to play in all 30 games last season, making 14 starts. Vance averaged 16.5 minutes and 3.2 points per game last season. He shot 41 percent from the field and 69 percent from the free throw line. He dished out 46 assists and tallied 24 steals in his freshman campaign.
Vance had three games where he scored in double figures, including a season-high 12 points in the final game of the year vs. Rio Grande.
During high school he started and lettered four years in basketball and was also a star for the football team. He was a first-team all-state selection in 2011 and averaged over 23 points, seven rebounds and five steals per game as a senior.
