A longtime friend to Floyd County, Sister Judy Yunker, of Martin, will be ordained Saturday in Prestonsburg as an Episcopal priest.

The ordination will take place at 1 p.m. in St. James Episcopal Church on Saturday, Jan. 12. All are welcome to attend the service.

Yunker has been in Eastern Kentucky since 1979 serving the community from the Mt. Tabor Dwelling Place Monastery, an ecumenical monastic community of women located in Martin. She also volunteers as chaplain for the Floyd County Emergency and Rescue Squad and is a member of the Kentucky Community Crisis response team.

Beginning in 1983, Sister Judy served as principal of Mountain Christian Academy for seven years and worked at the school as a teacher or board member until it’s closing 2009.

She will be ordained by Bishop Douglas Hahn, the Seventh Bishop of the Lexington Diocese. Hahn will also be present after the service to bless the new location of the Fishes and Loaves food pantry which has recently been expanded to serve more people in the Prestonsburg area.
