Logan County Diabetes meets to explore available resources

LOGAN – The Chief Logan Recreation Center hosted a meeting of the Logan County Diabetes Coalition (LCDC) on Jan. 8. The LCDC is made up of several organizations with a common goal to help prevent or manage diabetes.
Anise Nash, FNP-BC, CDE, CPT, is a certified diabetes educator at Marshall University’s Bruce Chertow Diabetes Center. She has been involved with the formation of the Logan County Diabetes Coalition, which has been in the process since early 2012.
“What we want to come out of this effort is that this will be something that continues in Logan County and not something that is here and gone,” said Nash, “We are a small group working on a big problem in the county. The more we all work together and collaborate, the better the outcome is going to be.”
In the past year, the coalition has had numerous screenings and short educational events. There has been a small amount of funding available through the Marshall University Rural Health Program. Grants were applied for and one for $2,000 from the Appalachian Diabetes Translation Program for emerging coalitions was received. Plans are in the works to re-apply for the larger grant not received from West Virginia Children’s Charities.
A group of 23 representing a dozen organizations attended the meeting, which had a goal of identifying the resources offered by and available from each program to function more efficiently, take advantage of sharing resources and working together on projects to be able to make a larger impact and help more people in this area.
Each agency represented gave a brief overview of the services they offer and programs they currently have in place. The group had a discussion about various approaches and programs to develop and they also discussed how to raise community awareness by having a website, using social media like Facebook, having a program on local access television and conducting training programs focused on increasing physical activity, better nutrition and self-management.
The various agencies are going to use a form they received at the meeting to guide them in listing their available resources and how they can work with others in the group and will present options to the group at the next meeting, which is tentatively scheduled for the second Tuesday at 11 a.m., at the Chief Logan Recreation Center.
