LOGAN – The first meeting of the Logan County Commission was held on Wed., Jan. 9. The commission took care of organizational matters and several community matters.


The first order of business was to swear Danny Godby in as commissioner. Godby’s wife, Debbie, looked on as Logan County Clerk John Turner swore him in. Godby was then re-elected president of the commission.


The commission decided to leave their meetings on the first and third Monday of each month, at 3 p.m. The next meeting was scheduled for Jan. 2, which is Martin Luther King Day. The meeting has been re-scheduled for Jan. 23 at 3 p.m.


Gordon Waters, General Manager for Armstrong Utilities of the tri-state area, addressed the commission to request a new agreement for the section of Logan County they operate in. Waters said they intend to sell the Dingess system, which is in Logan and Mingo counties. They are in negotiations with a potential buyer, but no agreement has been made to date. If they are not able to sell the system, they will close and remove equipment in early March. There will be 28 Logan County customers affected, who will have Direct TV and Dish as their only alternatives. Letters of notification to the customers went out yesterday. The commission is going to have the county attorney review the agreement before ruling on the issue.


A FEMA contract for asbestos inspections for 11 private dwellings in the Valley View Drive area was approved for Pinnacle Environmental, who came in with the lowest bid of $4,078.50.


The commission approved $3,500 for the Logan Fire Department to use as a match for a $100,000 grant they received from the Department of Homeland Security for installation of a sprinkler system and diesel exhaust removal system.


Joseph Curry, a student at Logan High School with a 4.14 grade point average, requested financial assistance to attend the Lead America Engineering and Technological Youth Leadership Conference, which will be held at Franklin W. Owen College at Boston, Mass. The commission approved $500 to help with expenses.


The commission approved up to $6,000 for the Garrett Fork Crime Watch to use for 15 mobile and five hand held radios and related equipment.


The commission approved $1,700 to help with the cost for officials and trophies for the Chapmanville Middle School Basketball Tournament held on Dec. 27, 28 and 29. The tournament included eight girls’ teams and 8 boys’ teams.


The commission approved the re-appointment of Robert “Bud” Baldwin to the board of the Deputy Sheriff’s Civil Service Commission. Baldwin will serve another four-year term.
