WEST WILLIAMSON – The Belfry Pirates might have thought they were along the coastline Saturday night as they saw a Hurricane blow by them.

The Pirates lost to the Redskins of Hurricane (actually pronounced Hur – ri – cun by the folks in West Virginia) 93-65 in the Hatfield-McCoy Shootout Saturday night. Belfry got behind early and never was able to catch up.

Belfry was behind 23-11 after one quarter and 49-24 at the half. The Redskins were hot in the first half and according to the Belfry statistician they shot 88 percent from the field.

The onslaught continued as Belfry fell behind 72-44 after three quarters.

“That is by far the best team we have played this year,” Belfry coach Randy Case said. “That being said, our guys didn’t guard on the perimeter like they needed to. We let them make a lot of open shots early.”

“We got down and just couldn’t fight back,” Casey added. “They are a very good team and are very skilled. We will go back to work this week and try to get better before our next game.”

Belfry committed 20 turnovers in the game against the Redskins.

The Pirates are now 7-6 on the season and will host district rival Phelps tonight at the BHS gym.

Belfry’s big senior post player Tony Messer scored 28 and pulled down 13 rebounds, while senior guard Josh Robinson was the only other player in double figures with 19 points. Messer scored 20 of his total in the second half. Robinson had 13 for the Pirates by halftime.

The Pirates ended the game shooting 23-46 from the field for 50 percent, 3-9 from behind the arc. They were 16-28 at the free throw line for 57 percent.

Trey Dawson led a balanced scoring attack for Hurricane with 16 points, while Raseen Harris scored 14 and Ace Estepp chipped in 11. Ian Miles and Noah Fenerty both scored eight for the Skins. In all, 12 players got into the scoring column for the visitors from Kanawha County.

Hurricane finished 35-62 from the floor for 56 percent and made 7-20 of their 3-pointers. They were 16-25 at the foul line for 65 percent.
