The selection committee for the West Virginia Hometown Invitational Tournament announced the first round pairings for the 2013 West Virginia Hometown Invitational Tournament for next week’s Division I South Regional.
The field for this year’s tournament consists of 24 Class A boys basketball programs divided equally into two divisions. Sixteen teams — eight each in the north and south brackets — will take part in the big school division, Division I, while eight teams — four each in the north and south — are scheduled to take part in the small school division, Division II.
Teams in Division I are guaranteed four games while Division II teams are guaranteed three games.
The Man Hillbillies, playing in their first WVHIT, will enter the tournament as the seventh seed. Man is slated to open tournament play on Jan. 29 against No. 2 seed Valley Fayette at 7:30 p.m. at Valley Fayette High School.
Valley Fayette is currently 6-2 on the season and was ranked No. 8 in last week’s Associated Press Boys Basketball Poll. The Greyhounds started the season 6-0 but have dropped their last two contests to Buffalo (Putnam) and Sissonville.
Joining Man and Valley (Fayette) in the South Region are defending champion and top seed Buffalo (Putnam), third seed Greenbrier West, fourth seed Richwood, fifth seed Sherman, sixth seed Midland Trail and eighth seed Fayetteville.
Slots in the north region are occupied by top seed St. Marys, second seed Clay-Battelle, third seed Tygarts Valley, fourth seed East Hardy, fifth seed South Harrison, sixth seed Cameron, seventh seed Doddridge County and eighth seed Valley (Wetzel).
Teams in the north region opened play last week with St. Marys defeating Valley (Wetzel) 70-52, South Harrison over East Hardy 57-45, Clay-Battelle over Doddridge County 70-47 and Tygarts Valley over Cameron 65-47.
Defending Division II champion Meadow Bridge, Hannan, Montcalm and Van will take part in the South Region of Division II while Harman, Hundred, Paden City and Union will take part in the North Region.
First round games in the south are slated for Jan. 29 with second-round games to follow on the Feb. 1. Third round games follow on Feb. 5 with the finals of the WVHIT set for Feb. 9 at the Summersville Arena and Conference Center.
