WEST LOGAN — If you are a resident of the Town of West Logan and have been thinking about running for elected office, now is your chance.

The Town of West Logan will hold an election on June 11, 2013, for town council positions and the filing deadline is coming up fast — Fri., Jan. 26.

The regular January council meeting was delayed by one week this month when several members were unable to make it on Jan. 14.

“As you may have heard, the town of West Logan has an upcoming election on June 11th,” City Clerk Mark Mareske said on Jan. 22. “Seats are available for the positions of Mayor, Town Clerk and Council member and the filing period is Jan. 26. The deadline closes at midnight.”

If anybody is interested in running for office in West Logan, they can call the Mareske at 304-687-7189. The filing fee is $5.

In other West Logan news, the town council agreed to accept a donation from the now-defunct West Logan Crimewatch organization. The donation may be used to purchase equipment needed by the police department such as a device to open locked car doors on up-to-date cars. On Saturday, West Logan Police chief Robert Ward was challenged to get the door open on an automobile that was still running in very cold weather, Mareske noted.

Council members approved the nomination of Sabrina Deskins to the position of Town Attorney.

Chief Ward had some good news for the council — an all-terrain vehicle that was reported as stolen was recovered this past month.

“A water company employee spotted it behind an area restaurant and called in about it. The vehicle was recovered and returned to the proper owner,” Ward said. “Since that incident, reported thefts have dropped back down to almost nothing again.”

There have been other police calls, however.

“We had one car fire. We had a reported accident where a car backed into a gasoline truck,” said Ward. “And there have been some complaints from residents about fireworks being put off in an inappropriate manner in the evenings. Apparently a tenant was accused of setting them off fireworks in the evening disturbing the peace. Due to that patrolling was increased. Disturbing the peace is against the law after all.”
