GOODY, Ky. - Simply put, the Phelps Hornets were just out-gunned Tuesday night at the Belfry High School gymnasium. The end version of the battle saw the Pirates stuff the visitors 85 to 31 in this 60th District matchup.

Belfry jumped out to a 35-6 first quarter lead and led 58-22 heading into the dressing room at the half. Coach Randy Casey’s team came out with smothering full-court pressure and jumped out to a 16-0 lead before Zack Avina made one of two free throws to give Phelps its first point.

Coach Bobby Varney of Phelps did all he could, but after losing eight seniors from last year’s squad, the Hornets have had a tough season.

Big Tony Messer had 14 first half points including two crowd-pleasing slam dunks. Brett Charles also had 14 points to lead Belfry in the first half.

It didn’t get much better in the second half as Belfry held Phelps to just nine points, eight in the third and just one in the fourth quarter. The Pirates scored 27 in the final two quarters.

Coach Casey substituted early and often in the first half and the junior varsity played most of the second half.

Messer ended up with 16 points and 10 rebounds for another double-double. Charles ended the game with 16, while Sean Hurley and Nick West each scored eight, Josh Robinson seven and Garrett Fannin seven. Nathan Copley had six off the bench, while 13 Belfry players got into the scorebook.

“I was pleased with our effort tonight and everybody got some good work in,” Casey said. “Now on to Logan Friday night. I look forward to playing in their Fieldhouse.”

“We practiced the right way the day before and we warmed up properly before the game. Those things carried over into the game and our defensive intensity was excellent. Everyone played hard,” Casey added.

Casey was glad that he got a lot of playing time and experience for some of his younger players.

Avina led Phelps with 12 points, while Compton added seven. Avina, a senior, has been averaging 18 points per game for coach Varney.

Belfry is now 8-6 on the season and will travel to Logan, W.Va. on Friday night to play in the Coalfield Classic. Phelps is now 5-14 and will motor to Jenkins on Friday.
