HAZARD – The Hazard City Commission this week approved the low bid for a sewer extension project that will bring service to the new elementary school currently under construction along Highway 80.

Officials with the Perry County Board of Education expect to have the new school, named East Perry Elementary, complete and open by the beginning of the 2013-14 school year. An important component of that project will be the installation of lines that will provide sewer service from the city of Hazard’s sewage treatment plant on Upper Second Creek.

The city commission on Tuesday evaluated a total of six bids for the installation of sewer lines running from Darfork to the new school, located on newly annexed property near the Daniel Boone Shopping Center. Of the six bids, the city awarded the contract to Flo-Line Contracting with the low bid of $338,352. The initial bid opening was held during a public meeting on Jan. 11.

City Manager Carlos Combs said the extension project could get underway in approximately a month’s time, and will take another six to eight weeks to complete. He said he expects the lines to be installed before the school’s opening in August.

“We’ve got to get it done and up before August, and I think we can,” Combs said.

In other business, the city heard the monthly report from Hazard Police Chief Minor Allen. The department opened a total of 43 cases during the last month of 2012, including 28 felony cases. More than $34,000 in property was stolen during the month, $2,470 of which has been recovered.

Of the cases field in December, five included a violent crime and 38 were drug related.

Hazard Fire Chief Sam Stacy also presented his monthly report, noting that the fire department responded to 55 calls in December, 40 of which reported a fire. The department also used 50,000 gallons of water during the month.
