The first ever Swim Competition will be held at the Larry Joe Harless Community Center Saturday, January 26. Warm-ups will start at 11 a.m. for the Buck Harless Invitational Swim Meet. Mingo Central High School swimmers will be competing with other regional high schools in the meet.

… The Tug Valley Panthers have two big games this weekend. They play at Logan tonight against highly ranked Greenbrier East and play host to Man on Saturday. The game at Logan is part of the Coalfield Classic this weekend at Willie Akers Arena.

… The Mingo County girl’s middle school tournament will be held next week at Mingo Central High School. The pairings, dates and times will be released in a couple of days and the WDN will have that info for our readers. The boy’s tourney will be the following week.

Right around the corner will be the sectional, regional and state tournaments for the high schools.

Belfry High School will be hosting the 60th District Tournament this year. As soon as I get the dates, times, etc. for all of the high school tournaments, I’ll publish it for the fans.

… The Cupid Shuffle run will take place in downtown Williamson on February 9. This course is 3.10 miles and similar to the one back in September held by the Tug Valley Road Runners Club. Runners will meet at the Coal House and then walk over to City Gym for the start at 12:45pm.

… Local MMA fighter Bo Preece is scheduled to fight Saturday night in Ashland, Ky. at the National Guard Armory. He is currently the Spartan Fighting Championships 145 pound champion.

… Morgantown High School handed top-ranked Martinsburg (11-1) its first loss of the season last Friday night. They got 23 points from Nathan Adrian to top the Bulldogs 65-59 in Morgantown. Adrian, a 6-foot-9 senior center, committed to West Virginia prior to his junior season. The win avenged a 55-39 Morgantown loss to Martinsburg.

The Mountaineers are reportedly looking at Martinsburg forward Donte Grantham, who had 17 to lead Martinsburg. Grantham is 6-7 senior and is now on the radar of a lot of college teams.

WVU should look at this in-state talent. They definitely need shooters and someone out on the wing that can score. It’s bad when the best players in the state go elsewhere.

Being a small state population-wise, the Mountain State usually does not have very many Division One type players.

…. The Cleveland Cavaliers assigned Kevin Jones to the D-League on Monday. The former Mountaineer basketball star was called up to the Cavs from the Canton Charge back in December but had limited action in his 15 games.

Jones averaged 1.9 points and 1.5 rebounds in nine minutes per contest. He will get more playing time down at Canton and can be called back up later.

When he had been with the Charge earlier in the season, he was one of the league’s most productive players with 23.6 points and 12.6 boards in five games.

Former WVU teammate Alex Ruoff is also on Canton’s roster, having played 22 games for the D-League squad.

… Former WVU star quarterback Pat White is considering a return to the NFL. White was a second round pick by Miami four years ago. His career didn’t work out and then he decided to try baseball.

Now, with the success of dual threat quarterbacks this past season, White would like to get another shot at the pros.

He won four bowl games for the Mountaineers, including two BCS bowls and broke several records at WVU.

His style of play has become far more common in the NFL. White has seen the success of Robert Griffin, III, Colin Kaepernick and others and hopes he can get a chance to show what he can do if a team will give him the opportunity as a free agent.
