PIKEVILLE – A 15-foot baseline jumper by sophomore Chance Armstrong with 4.6 seconds left gave No. 25 Cumberlands a 73-71 win over No. 3 Pikeville Saturday afternoon in the O. Wayne Rollins Center.

For Armstrong, it marked only his second field goal of the game The Mt. Washington product finished with four points and four rebounds in most of 17 minutes of action.

Pikeville had tied the game with 32 seconds left when senior guard Chris Johnson went high off the glass for a layup. The Pats called timeout to set the stage for the game-ender.

Senior Antonio Bumpus drove into the lane and kicked it to Armstrong for the game-winner.

Senior Trevor Setty had a 38-foot jumper that beat the horn but bounced softly off the rim.

Cumberlands stormed out to a lead early and was on top by nine only six minutes into the game before the Bears came back and led 34-30 at the half.

Pikeville (18-3, 9-3) led by11 when Johnson scored to make it 54-43 with 11:32 left. The Bears looked in control but Cumberlands came storming back for the win.

The Bears shot only 40 percent from the floor and was 3-of-17 (17.6 percent) from the arc. They did sink 20 of 23 free throws (87.0 percent).

Cumberlands (17-5, 8-4) shot 51.8 percent overall and was 5-of-14 (35.7 percent) from the arc. The Patriots won on a day they shot 10-of-20 from the line.

Setty led three Pikeville players in double figures with 25 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Senior Jamar Briscoe followed with 13 and Johnson added 12.

Senior Antonio Bumpus scored 20 to lead the Patriots. Junior Steve Goins followed with 13 and seven rebounds while junior James Archie added 11.

Pikeville will return to action at home on Thursday night when Bluefield College comes to town. The game will tip off at 8 p.m. at the East Kentucky Expo Center.

Cumberlands will visit St. Catharine on Thursday at 8 p.m.
