PRESTONSBURG - Prestonsburg High School senior Trey Stapleton spent part of the month of January in Phoenix, Ariz., competing in the Perfect Game MLK Championship. Stapleton played for the Bluegrass Stars, a team coached by Bryan Station High School’s Eddie Brooks and Ben Eubank. The Prestonsburg High School senior thrived during the event, earning a spot as a pitcher on the all-tournament team. Only one other teammate, Bryan Station standout Elijah Burdette, made the all-tournament.

Stapleton turned in an outstanding effort on the mound, registering seven strikeouts opposed to only one hit and a walk. The Prestonsburg hurler didn’t allow any earned runs in four innings and his fast ball clocked in at over 80 miles per hour. Stapleton also showed a good knuckle ball during the national tournament.

When he wasn’t pitching, Stapleton played third base and first base for the Stars. In nine plate appearances, Stapleton connected for four hits and drew a pair of walks.

Stapleton and the Stars played four games in the tournament and showed improvement in each outing.

Stapleton’s experience included playing on three difference fields, two of which are the spring training homes of Major League Baseball’s Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox. The Bluegrass Stars faced a team in their opening game that featured a player who had already received a multi-million dollar deal from the White Sox.

“It was a great opportunity for me and I feel very fortunate to have been invited and had the chance to play in the tournament,” Stapleton said. “Not only did I have the chance to see great competition, I also had a good game against top level competition. This was a great experience and one of the greatest times of my life.”

Likening the chance to play in the Perfect Game tournament to a “springboard” to his senior season, Stapleton is anxious to take the field as a Prestonsburg Blackcat in his final prep campaign.

Stapleton and his Prestonsburg High School baseball teams will start preseason practice in the middle of the month.
