PRESTONSBURG — Kentuckians for the Commonwealth is joining with the Floyd County Farmer’s Market, Community Farm Alliance, Mountain Association for Community Economic Development and Grow Appalachia to offer a day of workshops on how to save and earn money through small-scale farming.

The 2013 Growing Appalachia conference will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday, March 9, at the Wilkinson-Stumbo Convention Center at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park. The event is free and open to the public, but KFTC suggests a $10 donation from each adult participant to help defray costs.

The purpose of the conference is to give beginners and experienced growers tips they can use to save money or start a business. Throughout the day, there will workshops on topics such as:

• Extending the growing season

• Collecting wild edibles and medicinals

• Renewable energy

• Canning

• Farm shares

• Energy efficiency

• Organic gardening

• Dairy production

• Energy-efficient homes
