PIKEVILLE – The University of Pikeville women’s basketball team used a 16-0 run midway through the second half to knock off Indiana-Southeast 74-66 Sunday afternoon at the UPike Gym.


IUS (12-11) went on a 10-2 run to take a 44-41 lead, but the Bears ripped off 16 unanswered points to take control of the game.


Pikeville improved to 7-15 with its second straight win.


After leading most of the first half, IUS took a lead and was on top 24-23 after senior Ashmere Woods hit a jumper with 3:41 to play to end a 7-0 run.


But the Bears closed the half with eight of the final 10 points. Sophomore Christin Haney had all eight for the Bears, including a pair of three-point buckets to start the trend.


Pikeville led 31-26 at the break.


Trailing 39-34 with 15:53 to play, IUS went on a 10-2 run to regain the lead. Four different players scored, and when freshman Andrea Owens sank two free throws with 13:43 to play, the Grenadiers had a 44-41 lead.


Five different Bears scored in the stretch, with freshman Peyton scoring six of her team-high 16 points. When freshman Kayla Day sank two free throws with 7:47 to play, the Bears had stretched their lead to 57-44.


After shooting 51.7 percent in the second half, the Bears hit 46.7 percent for the game (28-of-60) and won the rebounding battle 39-34.


Wright, who also led the team with eight rebounds, paced four Bears in double figures, with junior Callisha Johnson following with 15 markers. Haney tossed in 15 while junior Brogan Conley finished with 10.


Senior Anne Klee, who had seven points and five rebounds, added five steals, while senior Sally Roberts had four to go with six points and three steals.


IUS had two players in double figures, led by sophomore Heather Wheat’s 21. Woods had a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. She added six steals.


Pikeville will be back in action on Thursday night when a road trip begins at Georgetown College with a 6 p.m. game. IUS is on the road Thursday as well, visiting Midway College.
