CHAPMANVILLE — Old Man Winter might have struck again over the weekend but spring is right around the corner.

Even though up to five inches of snow fell on Logan County in the wee hours of Friday morning and into the weekend and temperatures dipped to 15 degrees, the spring baseball season is almost here.

You don’t have to have Punxsutawney Phil tell you that.

Unbelievably, high school baseball practices are just about a month away.

The Chapmanville Regional High School baseball team is gearing up for the new season and hope another successful spring is waiting in the wings.

The Tigers released their 2013 baseball schedule recently and a lot of interesting games are on the slate.

Chapmanville is set to open the season on March 18 at home against non-conference team Sherman.

New to this year’s schedule are home-and-home series against Pike Central (Ky.), Clay County, Ravenswood and Class AAA Ripley.

The Tigers also play a home-and-home against former Cardinal Conference member Point Pleasant, which is now a Class AAA school. A home-and-away series with Mount View is also on the docket for Chapmanville as well as a series against the Class A Van Bulldogs and the county rival Man Hillbillies.

CRHS, coached by 12th-year head mentor Eric Ellis, are also slated to play league home-and-home series against Wayne, Mingo Central, Herbert Hoover, Scott, Poca and Sissonville.

Chapmanville will also host Cardinal Conference team Tolsia on March 26 in a home doubleheader. For the second straight year, the Rebels do not have a home field due to the construction of the brand new Fort Gay Middle School on the site of the old Fort Gay High School football/baseball facility.

As reported earlier in the Logan Banner, Chapmanville will not face off with 3A county rival Logan for the second straight season.

The Tigers and Wildcats last played in 2011 during Chapmanville’s 35-3 Class AA state championship season. The series was then put on hiatus.

Chapmanville will once again host the annual Daffer Memorial Tournament at Ted Ellis Field. The Tigers are set to host Wayne on April 12 and 3A Capital on April 13 during the tourney.

It was the Wayne Pioneers which sent Chapmanville packing in last year’s 2A regional semifinals as WHS rallied to defeat the Tigers 6-5 at Ted Ellis Field. The Pioneers plated two runs in the top of the seventh and held off the Tigers in the last part of the inning to seal the win and end Chapmanville’s championship reign with a 20-11 record.

As always, the Tigers have plenty of returning talent coming back, including pitchers Dustin Conley and Nick Brumfield, infielder Tristan Thompson, outfielders Brady Cox and Trey Dalton and others.

Plenty of talent was also lost due to graduation as Chapmanville’s potent one-two punch of Jordan Banks and Tyler Cox are gone.

Banks hit .474 with three homers and 31 RBI. Cox had a .420 average with five homers, 19 RBI and six doubles.

Chapmanville also lost Tyler Collins due to graduation. Collins hit .375 with two homers and team-bests in RBI with 32 and doubles with 10.

Banks, a fireball throwing lefty, was the ace pitcher for the Tigers as he was 5-2 with a 1.44 ERA in 2012. In nine starts, Banks struck out 72 in 48.1 innings of work.

The following is Chapmanville’s 2013 baseball schedule:
