NEWTOWN – The Mingo Central Lady Miners defeated visiting Belfry 43-35 Thursday evening on Senior Night.
The seniors on the squad were honored before the contest.
Caitlyn Cantrell led a balanced scoring attack for the Lady Miners with 12 points. Chrissy Farmer added nine points and Hannah Church chipped in six.
Jackie Stack led the Lady Pirates with 13, while Paige Goff added 10 for BHS.
“As far as Belfry, we looked sluggish at times,” said Mingo coach David Hanshaw. “This was our third game in three days. Farmer was our leader on the floor tonight with her steady play especially on the defensive end. I thought Church and Cantrell, a couple of our freshmen, gave us a huge lift late in the game. I am encouraged by the fact that we usually have between 8 and 10 different players in the scoring column every night, which makes us hard to defend if we stay aggressive offensively.”
On Wednesday night, Mingo Central lost at Lincoln County 50-46.
“We lost this game because of a lack of effort. We just didn’t show up mentally ready to play,” Hanshaw said. “We gave up too many offensive rebounds in which they capitalized on. You can’t give a physical team very many second chance opportunities without it eventually costing you in the end. “
Ashley Curry had 16 points and 13 rebounds in the and Farmer added 11.
Mingo Central was scheduled to play Belfry again on the road Friday night.
