HAZARD — An apartment fire in downtown Hazard that happened over the weekend is being investigated.

Hazard Fire Chief Sam Stacy said firefighters responded to the fire on 149 Laurel Street at 10:34 p.m. Sunday, and the fire was contained within 15 minutes.

“When they [first responders] first got there, they saw heavy smoke coming out of the first floor that’s not ground-level,” Stacy said.

Stacy said the fire seems to have started in the kitchen area of apartment 4, the tenants of which had just moved out that day. The fire was contained to the apartment, and there was no visible damage outside.

Hazard Police Officer Adam Baker said he could not release the names of the tenants of the apartment until they had been contacted.

Stacy said the investigation is ongoing, however officials do think the cause of the fire is suspicious.
