West Virginia State Police officers were called to a residence in the Switzer in reference to someone attempting to commit suicide.

A witness told officers Ernest Jay Nelson, 42, had a firearm and was intent on shooting himself. When the officers questioned Nelson, he told them repeatedly he had no firearms at the residence. A search of the residence turned up a pink, Smith and Wesson Walter P22 handgun with the serial number scratched off. The gun was hidden in a garbage can in the living room. Nelson admitted to officers he hid the weapon in an attempt to keep the officers from knowing he had it.

The officers found a plate in the kitchen that contained a straw and credit card. There was an unknown white, powdery substance in the plate as well. Nelson denied any knowledge of the white powdery substance.

Nelson was charged with obstructing and possession of a controlled substance. His bond was set at $2,500.
