MATEWAN — The Thacker Water Project, a long sought-after endeavour by the Town of Matewan, is finally becoming reality.

Pat Rawlings, Senior Designer with Triad Engineering Inc., spoke to the Matewan Town Council during its Tuesday night meeting, saying that bids were opened for the project last week.

The low bid for the waterline portion of the project was $1,808,266 and the low bid for the storage was $232,650. While the council doesn’t have to accept the lowest bids, Rawlings said that those bids were both under the previously estimated amounts and kept the project well within budget. He also said that both companies who entered the bids, which were not immediately available, were reputable and that he had worth with each of them before.

He asked the council to pass a motion of conditional acceptance of the bids once approvals were gained from the appropriate funding agencies. The motion was unanimously carried.

Mayor Sheila Kessler asked Rawlings when the groundbreaking could be held for the project.

“I estimate that we’ll be breaking ground on April 1,” he said.

Construction is estimated to take approximately nine months.
