Winfield dropped the Logan High School boys’ basketball team to 6-12 on the season with Wednesday night’s 61-42 victory over the Wildcats at the Shootout at the Big House which was held at the Charleston Civic Center.

The game was the last of five varsity contests held in the one-day event at the civic center.

There was a moment of silence and prayer before the game for legendary Logan coach and Logan County Commissioner Willie Akers, who reportedly stumbled and fell on the Civic Center floor earlier in the day, fracturing his C6 vertebrae and breaking his nose.

Akers, 76, was taken to CAMC Hospital in Charleston, where he remains today. He was reportedly scheduled to undergo tests on Thursday.

In Wednesday’s game with the Generals, Zach Fisher led Winfield as he scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds. John Bellomy took game-high honors with 18 points. Chris Turner added 12 points and eight boards for Winfield, which improved to 12-8 on the season.

A.J. Reynolds paced the Wildcats with 14 points. Brynden “Worm” Street also broke into double digits in scoring with 12 points. Chase Preston tallied seven, while Z. Minnick had five, Trent Dalton three, T.J. Tomblin two and Josh Rein one.

Winfield jumped on top of Logan 17-9 after one quarter and held a 34-15 lead at the half after outscoring the Cats 17-6 in the second. The Generals led 46-29 after three and outscored Logan 15-12 in the fourth to set the final score.

In other Shootout at the Big House games: Lincoln County downed Elkins 53-39; Liberty Raleigh edged Sissonville 46-45; Class A No. 1 Tug Valley thumped Charleston Catholic 61-38; and George Washington won 53-48 over Parkersburg South in overtime.

In the Tug Valley game, the Panthers were led by Mikey Newsome, who poured in 23 points. Austin Brewer had 18. Newsome was 2-for-2 from 3-point land.

Logan is scheduled to play at Tug Valley on Saturday night. Logan went 0-2 against Tug Valley last season. The Cats were slated to host Tolsia on Thursday night.
