A win over Letcher Central Tuesday in the 53rd District tournament assured the Cordia Lions a spot in the 14th Region tournament for the first time since 2008.
Cordia came out flat in the first quarter, falling behind by double digits early before making up some ground and going into halftime just four points behind. Coach Rodrick Rhodes made some adjustments at halftime, and the Lions upped their defensive pressure and forced some turnovers, while also finding their shot on the offensive end. Cordia shot just 30 percent from the field in the first half, compared to 54 percent in the second.
Cordia won the game by a final score of 73-43. The Lions were led in scoring by senior Dondre Warren, who added another double-double on the season with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Senior Marlon King and junior guard A.J. Tagaloa each chipped in 14 points.
Senior point guard Emmanuel Owootoah, who has been evaluated by several Division I programs this season, scored 10 points to go with eight assists and four steals. West Virginia coach Bob Huggins was in attendance during Tuesday’s game against Letcher Central, as was a member of the coaching staff from Villanova. Several others schools have shown interest in Owootoah, including UCLA, Kentucky, and Florida State among others.
