PRESTONSBURG - Prestonsburg High School senior lineman Derek Newsome signed with Kentucky Christian University during a ceremony held Friday.

Newsome was a three-year starter for the Blackcats. A team captain, Newsome was a 2012 Governor’s Scholar and he started FCA at PHS this past year.

“We are excited that Derek has chosen Kentucky Christian University,” KCU Assistant Coach Gene Peterson said. “We play very competitive football as is evidenced by our 7-4 record in the Mid-South Conference and being ranked nationally. Derek comes from an outstanding high school program that knows how to win and we look forward to him suiting up for us.”

Prestonsburg Coach John DeRossett was pleased to witness his player ink a letter of intent with Kentucky Christian University.

“I am very proud of Derek,” DeRossett said. “He has been a leader both on and off the field for our team. I know his parents, Charles and Leann, are very proud. Kentucky Christian University just got a little better today by adding such a high character person to their program. I look forward to traveling up to Grayson and watching him play.”
