BEECH CREEK — Mingo County Sheriff’s Department Deputy M. Mounts placed 2 Beech Creek residents under arrest on charges of receiving and transferring stolen firearms and obstructing.
According to the criminal complaint filed in Mingo County Magistrate Court, Todd Carpenter, 33, who also faces a felony charge of daytime burglary, and Don Mahon, 29, sold firearms that were stolen (one being a Browning 12 gauge rifle taken from the home of Willard Hatfield) to Jerry Lee Ellis, Jr., of Ben Creek, who was not aware the guns didn’t belong to the defendants.
During the initial questioning, both Carpenter and Mahon denied having any knowledge of the stolen property, but later recanted their story and admitted to the crime after other subjects involved in the matter provided incriminating testimony. The guns were valued at over $1,000.
The defendants were arraigned before Magistrate Pam Newsome and were released from jail and placed on home confinement after meeting the requirements and stipulations of their bonds. They are scheduled to be in court for their preliminary hearings later this week.
