The Logan High School wrestling team performed very well at last week’s Class AAA Region 4 championships as three placed and two qualified for this week’s state tournament at Huntington.
Five Logan wrestlers competed in the regionals as senior Cody Abbott finished third at 120 pounds and junior Chance Aric Ooten was fourth at 220 pounds and both moved on to the state meet.
Abbott is 25-11 on the season, while Ooten has an 18-8 record.
“Both wrestlers competed well,” Logan wrestling coach Jason Davis said. “I am very happy that Cody and Chance were able to qualify for the states. The streak of Logan sending wrestlers to states continues. That streak dates back to 1997.”
Logan’s top seed in the 195-pound weight class, junior Alex Crum, just missed making the cut as he placed sixth and finished the season at 28-9.
“He just wasn’t as aggressive as he had been and his opponents really came after him,” Davis said of Crum. “Alex suffered a facial injury last week during practice. He received four stitches and was forced to wear a protective mask. I believe the mask may have been a contributing factor in his performance. Take nothing away from his opponents. They wrestled well and were more aggressive. Alex just had a bad weekend.”
Dustin Thompson also competed in the regionals in the 132-pound weight class. He closed out 3-3.
“Dustin is a senior and he wrestled well but had tough opponents as he lost back-to-back matches,” Davis said. “I am so proud of him for his effort this season. Dustin came back from a broken arm he sustained early in season. I just wish for him that he could have had more success this year.”
Freshman Jordan Oney went 0-2 in the regional tourney. The 182-pounder finished the season 14-14.
“Jordan wrestled extremely well. He is such an aggressive and difficult wrestler to compete against. I am really excited to have him back next year,” Coach Davis said.
The WVSSAC state wrestling meet is scheduled to begin on Thursday at Huntington’s Big Sandy Arena. Matches are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Action then begins on Friday at 11:30 a.m. and will continue throughout the day. Saturday’s matches are set to get under way at 10:45 a.m. with championship matches set for 6:30 p.m.
Logan’s Abbott is scheduled to open the state tourney against freshman Bradley DeRito of Musselman (37-3).
Ooten opens against Ripley sophomore Frederick Roush (6-3).
