Local folk singer and member of the Friendly Neighbor radio show Elaine Purkey led members of the West Virginia Public Workers Union and others in several folk songs during the WVPWU’s 7th Annual President’s Day Rally. Members of the UE Local 170 rallied Monday in the lower rotunda of the State Capitol Building to raise awareness about wages, benefits and working conditions for public workers. Local 170 is calling for a pay increase, repeal of involuntary employee transfers, seniority rights to be extended to state workers and an increase in enforcement of the state’s occupational safety and health laws for public workers. Other issues include honoring the right of public workers to have representation in meetings with management and understaffing.
