GOODY, Ky. – The Belfry Pirates saw four players score in double figures and they controlled the game from the start to win the 60th District Tournament Wednesday night at the BHS gym.

The Pirates (14-9) defeated county rival Pike Central 63-53. The two teams had split their two regular season games.

Brett Charles led the way with 21 points, while Josh Robinson had 14, Tony Messer 13 and Sean Hurley 11 for the Pirates. Hurley swished in a trio of 3-pointers.

Messer led the team with nine rebounds, while Robinson dished out seven assists. Belfry had 10 turnovers in the game.

Robinson was clutch at the free throw line in the final quarter making 8-10 at the free throw line.

“I thought he (Robinson) was the best player in the gym tonight,” Belfry coach Randy Casey said. “He helped us control the game. We wanted the ball in his hands. He knocked them down when we needed the points.”

Belfry only led 13-11 after one quarter of play, but increased their lead to 30-19 at the half.

“We didn’t make enough shots early, but then we got it inside,” Casey added.

The Pirates led 46-33 after three quarters. Pike Central (14-16) tried full-court pressure in the fourth period, but Belfry was able to beat the Hawks across midcourt.

The Hawks cut the lead to 52-43 with just under 4:00 minutes left, but could never get any closer.

In the game, Belfry’s Messer, a big 6-5 center, recorded the 783rd rebound of his career, breaking the school record of 782, set by Jonathan Wright. Wright graduated in the class of 2000. After the game, Wright presented Messer with the game ball as a “passing of the torch” gesture.

Messer has been playing with a gimpy ankle and has been wearing a brace. But he braved through the pain.

BHS was 19-45 from the field for 42 percent, including 4-10 from 3-point range. They made 21-29 at the charity stripe for 72 percent.

Pike County Central only made 37 percent of their shots making 20-54, including 1-8 from behind the arc. They made 12-23 at the foul line for 52 percent.

Ethan Blackburn led PCC with 12 points, while Mac Justice scored nine and Teddy Smith and Gaige Ray eight each.

Both teams will advance to the 15th Regional Tournament at the Expo Center. The pairings will be drawn on Saturday morning.
