The only thing missing were the peach baskets.
It was that kind of night for the Chapmanville and Scott high school girls’ basketball teams.
Despite the low scoring Scott will take it as the Lady Hawks advanced in the Class AA sectional girls’ basketball tournament with Wednesday night’s 32-29 victory over the Lady Tigers at Logan High School’s Willie Akers Arena.
Unranked Scott (15-8), the sectional No. 2 seed, moves on to play Class AA No. 9-ranked and top-seed Tolsia (20-3) in Friday night’s section finals at Logan. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
Tolsia, the Cardinal Conference regular season champions, moved on with a 53-41 win over Mingo Central in Wednesday night’s other sectional tourney semifinal at Logan.
Chapmanville, seeded third, saw its season come to a close at 11-12.
It was the second straight year the Lady Tigers were ousted in the sectional tourney semifinals. Last season, Chapmanville was eliminated at Mingo Central by the Miners after the game was moved from Williamson.
Wednesday night’s game was the final prep contest for Chapmanville’s six seniors — Katelynn Hall, Jessica Rideout, Autumn Baisden, Hailey Price, Katelynn Manns and Chelcie Pritchard. The sextet were sophomore members of Chapmanville’s 2011 Class AA state tourney team, which lost to eventual state champion Summers County in the opening round.
The low score with Scott was really no surprise.
The two Cardinal Conference teams had met twice during the season with Scott winning 45-42 and 41-37.
The Lady Tigers led Scott 10-7 after one quarter and were outscored 3-2 in the second quarter to lead 13-9 at the half.
The Lady Hawks then outscored Chapmanville 16-8 in the third to lead 25-21. Chapmanville held a 7-6 edge in the fourth but it was not enough.
Chapmanville had its chances late in the game.
Scott had went up 31-26 with 4:57 left in the contest after a hoop inside the lane by Andrea Rankin.
The game then went through a scoreless drought before Hall stepped up and drilled a 17-foot topside jumper to pull Chapmanville to within 31-28.
Scott got the ball back and looked to milk the clock or at least draw a foul and extend the lead. The Lady Hawks, however, turned the ball over on an inbounds back-court violation.
Chapmanville dribbled down court and couldn’t get an open shot so the Lady Tigers called timeout with 12.1 ticks left.
After inbounding the ball, Kristin DesRocher got a look at a potential game-tying 3-point shot but misssed it off the rim.
Scott rebounded the ball and Rankin was fouled with 1.3 seconds to go.
Rankin missed the free throw but time expired as Scott moved on in the sectional tournament.
Rideout led the Lady Tigers with nine points. Hall had seven, while top scorer DesRocher was held to six points. Scott shadowed The 5-11 DesRocher most of the game with a box-and-one defense. She was guarded most of the night by 6-2 Ali Whitman. Hillary Hainer, Baisden and Manns all had two points each.
Rankin led Scott with 10 points. Whitman had nine and Jaimee Dotson and Julie Conway netted six each.
The Lady Hawks were 3-for-4 from the free throw line. Chapmanville was true on 6-of-9 of its foul shots.
Scott endured a scoring drought covering 10:50 in the first half.
In the Tolsia-Mingo Central game — a battle between two more Cardinal Conference teams — Krista Maynard led the Rebels with 21 points. Jordan Presley had 18 and Savannah Winnett 10. Ashley Curry paced the Mingo Central Miners with an 11-point effort.
Tolsia was 21-for-33 from the foul line. The Miners were 11-for-17. Presley connected on 10-of-19 from the charity stripe.
