CHARLESTON — A Scott High School student has been honored by the state senate for receiving the national GEAR UP Youth of the Year award.

Senator Ron Stollings of Boone County, along with Senators Art Kirkendoll of Logan, Bob Plymale of Wayne, John Unger of Berkeley, Mike Green of Raleigh and Bob Williams of Taylor County sponsored the resolution honoring Kendyl Ryan.

Ryan, a senior at Scott High in Madison, has been a participant in the GEAR UP program since 2008. She was chosen from among thousands of candidates nationwide at the GEAR UP national conference in Washington, D.C. earlier this year.

Stollings said he and his colleagues wanted to recognize Ryan “for her outstanding accomplishment, her work in the community, and for setting an example for all West Virginians of what can be accomplished with hard work, dedication and spirit.”

The senate resolution, approved last week, says Ryan “has overcome many obstacles and challenges in her life and has developed into a young leader and role model to her siblings and peers.”

The resolution noted that the GEAR UP program is designed to “significantly increase both the academic performance and the rigorous preparation of students who participate in post-secondary education.”
