AFLEX, Ky. — As schools all across the nation celebrate “Read Across America Week”, held in honor of Theodor Seuss Geisel, the Mother Goose Daycare, located at Aflex, Ky., has joined in on the fun of “Dr. Seuss”.

The youngsters attending Mother Goose have enjoyed a fun-filled week of eating “Green Eggs and Ham”, making “Cat in the Hat” hats, tracing their feet and listening to the wonderful, exciting children’s books penned by Dr. Seuss.

At the beginning of the week, the daycare students were treated to activity books to kick off the Dr. Seuss event. The theme on Monday was “Silly Sock Day”, and every child wore mismatched colorful socks while dying eggs green to eat while listening to the “Green Eggs and Ham” story that was read by Jason Brown, father of Jacob, a student at the facility.

Tuesday was “Pajama Day”, and each child was asked to wear their favorite pj’s and were treated to Goldfish snack crackers while Kiera Lovell, a student from Belfry Middle School, read them the story “One Fish Two Fish, Red Fish Blue Fish”. The students completed art projects by taking colored tissue paper and gluing it on a cutout of a fish from the story.

Wednesday was “Mismatched Day”. Children wore clothing that did not match or that was worn inside out or backwards. They thoroughly enjoyed the story of the “Cat in the Hat”, narrated by Rachel Dove-Baldwin, a reporter from the Williamson Daily News. The kids were served cupcakes decorated in honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday on March 2. The students colored and cut out their “Cat in the Hat” hats that were worn in the preschool classroom while they listened to the story.

Today will be “Slipper Day”, and the children will be wearing house shoes and will be drawing silhouettes of their feet and cutting them out to represent “The Foot Book” that will be read by Pat May, the Family and Youth Service Coordinator at Belfry High School. The students will be given “Fruit by the Foot” snacks to go along with the theme of the day. The staff will help the kids place the footprints throughout the daycare to represent their steps over the course of a day.

Tomorrow will be “Crazy Hat Day”, or “Wear a Dr. Seuss T-Shirt” day. The children will wear hats that represent the story “Cat in the Hat” and will enjoy listening to the “ABC Book” that will be read by Gordon Wallace, the owner of Mother Goose Daycare. The kids will be served ABC and 123’s for lunch before resting and having a good time for the remainder of the day while watching the “Cat in the Hat” movie and eating popcorn for a snack.

The day care director, Brittany Maynard, and her staff members Paula Marion and Keri Lovell-Whitt, voiced their appreciation to everyone who read to their students, or who contributed to Dr. Seuss Week in any way.
