PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The Belfry Pirates lost a heartbreaker in the first round of the 15th Region Tournament being held at the Eastern Kentucky Expo Center.

East Ridge squeaked by the Pond Creek boys 61-59 on Tuesday night.

Belfry senior Sean Hurley fired in a 3-pointer to tie the game at 59-all with :09 seconds left.

Then Mike Fields drove down and made a layup with :02 left on the clock as East Ridge took the lead.

“We played extremely hard and did a good job defensively,” BHS head coach Randy Casey said. “It came down to the last possession. That was a tough way to end the season.”

“I was really sad today – especially for our seniors,” Casey added. “I hated it for them.”

Nick West had one of his best games of the season scoring 15 points. Tony Messer scored 13, Brett Charles added 12, while Josh Robinson and Hurley each scored eight for the Pirates. Cameron Johnson chipped in three points.

The Pirates were 9-13 at the free throw line for 69 percent, and 22-48 from the floor for 46 percent, including 6-11 from behind the arc for 54 percent.

Messer pulled down 12 rebounds, while Charles hauled in seven. Robinson dished out seven assists for BHS.

Belfry will lose Messer, West, Charles, Robinson and Hurley to graduation.

Fields led the Warriors with 17 points, while Jacob Skeens scored 13 and Johnny Miller 11.

Belfry ended the season with a 14-10 record and won the 60th District tournament last week.

East Ridge (15-4) advances on to take on Sheldon Clark (20-10) on Friday at 8 p.m.

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Sheldon Clark won its first round game in the 15th regional tournament by beating Betsy Layne 64-55.

Chase Parsley and Dylan James led coach Frankie Smith’s team with 18 points each. Chase Kirk fired in 16.

The Cardinals will now take on East Ridge on Friday at 8 p.m.
