Claude C. Rice, 46, of Hewitt, faces multiple charges after crashing a vehicle he was driving without permission.

According to the police report, Rice crashed the vehicle he was driving on County Rt. 07. At the time, he could not stand up and smelled of alcohol.

He had several abrasions and contusions to this facial area and complained of back pain. He requested EMS transport him to the hospital for treatment.

While officers were enroute to the hospital, dispatch advised them Rice had been “raising cain” at the emergency room and then fled. The officers saw Rice staggering down the hospital drive and questioned why he left the emergency room. He was very intoxicated and beligerent when he told the officers he hadn’t done anything wrong and he was going home and refused to comply with the officers commands.

Officers found his driver’s license had been revoked for driving under the influence. The accused became even more beligerent, verbally assaulting the officers and then jumping out of his chair and making physical contact.

Rice was highly intoxicated, unstable and refused to remain seated. The officer had to deploy his chemical weapon to gain control over him. While the officers were providing after care, the accused once again attempted to fight with them.

The vehicle Rice had been driving belonged to his sister, who told officers her brother had taken her car without permission while she was attending a funeral.

Rice was charged with driving under the influence, driving revoked for DUI, failing to maintain contol, three counts of obstructing, three counts of battery on a police officer, three counts of assault on a police officer and joy riding.
