On Saturday, the Perry County Central Commodores hooked up with the Knott Central Patriots with a trip to Rupp Arena on the line. The Commodores took the first two meetings of the season, and were looking to keep their streak alive.

The game started tight as it took more than two minutes to light the scoreboard. The two teams then traded baskets. At that point, Perry Central went ice cold from the floor, and by the time the horn sounded they were down double digits (13-3).

Knott County came out strong in the second period and increased their lead. Perry Central was able to shut the Patriots down completely in the final five minutes of the half, but could not find the basket to cut into the lead. Going into the break, the Commodores trailed 21-8.

Both teams’ offense struggled in the third period, with scoring still at a premium. With eight minutes remaining to play, Perry Central found themselves trailing 28-14.

Perry Central caught fire in the fourth quarter, but so did the Patriots. The Commodores were able to more than double their output for the game, but could do little to get back in the game. Knott County went on to win the game, and the title, by the final count of 52-32.

The Commodores finished the season with a record of 26-8, picking up title wins in the WYMT Mountain Classic and the 54th District tournament along the way.

Knott Central will now advance to the Sweet 16 for the second straight season and take on Clay County, winners of the 13th Region, in the opening round. The game is set for 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 7.

Perry Central (32) Braxton Beverly 9, Travis Stacy 3, Justin Johnson 11 and Dalton Cornett 9.

Knott Central (52) Justice 20, Short 13, Hall 9, Christian 3, Cornett 3 and Shrum 4.
