A video of an overcrowded school bus alarmed Logan County parents who have asked the Logan County Board of Education to take action.

The video was taken by a seventh-grade student at Man Middle School and shows students four or five to a seat and standing in the aisles of what appears to be a moving bus.

The Logan County Board of Education policy says how many students are in seats depends on the the capacity for the bus. West Virginia School policy forbids drivers from moving while students are standing.

Reports quoted LBOE Director of Transportation Mark Adkins, “There are times when the buses have mechanical failures and we must place students on another bus to get home.”

According to one of the parents, there is a single bus transporting children who live from the East End of Man to Proctor Bottom (Amherstdale) and one other bus covering the route from Proctor Bottom to Lorado. In the past, there were two buses for each of the two routes.

Students who have had to stand also complained they had to exit the bus several times to allow students in the back to get off the bus.

Logan County Board of Education Superintendent Wilma Zigmond said even when additional students are put on a bus, it is still not supposed to exceed the capacity for the bus. Zigmond said the board will investigate the issue.
