MONAVILLE, W.Va. — James Melvin “Pete” Spradlin, 66, of Monaville, and Renick, passed away Sunday, March 10, 2013, at his home in Monaville with his loving wife by his side.

Born November 29, 1946, at Stirrat, he was a son of Betty Curtis and the late Robert Spradlin.

Pete was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in Germany during the Vietnam War. He was self-employed as a carpet installer when he was not working in the coal mines. He last worked at Kedco Coal Company and retired in 1998. He was a former member on the Board of Directors of Logan Regional Medical Center. In July 2000, he bought property in Greenbrier County and with the help of his brother-in-law, David, and his sons, he built his cabin. If you happened to see him anytime over the last 13 years he was either on his way to the cabin or had just returned. Some of his happiest times were spent there with his family and friends. If his friend Jon Sheets stopped by it was time to go to Long John Silver’s and if Danny Seldomridge stopped by it was always beer-thirty. If Micky Webb was at the cabin with him it was hard to say which could tell the biggest tale or chew the most tobacco. Even though he was not a hunter, he always had to spend each hunting season at the cabin to keep track of the deer kill and to socialize. He had a unique sense of humor and enjoyed playing jokes on everyone.

He was greeted in heaven by his beloved maternal grandparents, Mark and Linda Curtis; paternal grandparents, Dord and Bethel Spradlin; daughter, Sara Spradlin; brothers, David Elliot Spradlin and Robert Dord “Buck” Curtis, and his in-laws, Sidney and Hazel Crum. Also waiting to play sort of joke on him were two special cousins, Polly Wilburn Mullins and Terri Litteral Martin. Survivors include his loving wife of more than 34 years, Ruby; sons, Robert Spradlin of Beckley, Andrew Thomas and Sherri Glycadgis of Monaville, Jack and Audrey “Sissy Bug” Blankenship of Ethel, Geoffrey and Rachel Blankenship of Lavalette, and James Melvins Spradlin II and Mark Phillip Spradlin, both of North Carolina; he was papaw and Poppy to eight grandchildren, Danyell and Caleb Long of Norton, Va., Jackie Lynn Blankenship and Ryan Albert Blankenship, both of Ethel, Caleb Garret Glycadgis, Shane Michael Vance and Kennadee Yvonne Vance, all of Monaville, Tiffani Nichole Spradlin of Mud Fork, and Zane “Colorado” Crawford of Lavalette; his mother, Betty Lou Anderson of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; two brothers, Mark and Donna Anderson of Reynoldsburg, and Richard and Marlene Curtis of Logan; he was uncle to Linda Pridemore and her two children, Brandon and Grace, David Spradlin, Kelli Curtis and her daughter, Lacy, Ali Anderson, Amanda Anderson, Samantha and Matt Chafin, Sidney Crum, April Bevino, James May, Raistlin Cook, Cherry Lynn Skidmore, Jamie Skidmore and her two daughters, Michelle and Ashlee and Charles and Becky Skidmore and their sons, Tyler and Owen; his best friends Micky Webb of Monaville, Jon Sheets of Renick and Matt Mullins of Monaville; his sisters-in-law, Linda Curtis of Ethel, and Sheila Crum and Lucy and C.R.
