PIKEVILLE – The Central Appalachian Institute for Research and Development recently welcomed Melanie Stevens to its staff, as marketing and development officer.

Stevens comes to CAIRD after serving the City of Pikeville as director of economic development. She also has previous experience serving the five-county region of the Big Sandy Area Development District as a community and economic development project developer.

A lifelong resident of Eastern Kentucky, Stevens earned her bachelor’s degree in communication from the University of Pikeville.

“I am excited to partner with people from all of the area development districts and find out how CAIRD can be a resource to their communities,” said Stevens.

Since 2003, she has maintained grant administrator certification through the Kentucky Department for Local Government. Her experience demonstrates a strong history of generating successful grant proposals for projects in Eastern Kentucky. These projects include economic development, infrastructure, community facilities, housing, public safety, planning, trails and emergency relief.

Stevens is a member of the Kentucky Association for Economic Development and graduate of the Kentucky Institute for Economic Development. She is an active member of the Southeast Kentucky Chamber of Commerce and looks forward to meeting other Chamber organizations in CAIRD’s region.

She lives in Pike County with her husband, Dwayne.

Located in Eastern Kentucky, CAIRD is a non-profit public policy organization designed to provide long-term educational and developmental strategies to establish sustainable and vibrant communities that will improve the quality of life for citizens of Central Appalachia. In addition to creating opportunities for scholarly research and development and collaborative research between postsecondary institutions in Central Appalachia, CAIRD is building relationships with state and local governments, federal agencies and non-profits in order to impact public policy decisions, promote economic growth and foster initiatives for community outreach and education.
