TULSA, Okla. — The Marshall University softball team was defeated by No. 21/22 Tulsa on Sunday in the Collins Family Softball Complex in Tulsa, Okla., in Conference USA action.
Tulsa swept the weekend series with the Herd, also winning 6-0 and 9-6 last Saturday.
The Golden Hurricane shut out the Thundering Herd in five innings and allowed Marshall one hit in the final game of the series.
Tulsa’s Aimee Creger had a string of strikeouts to sit down the first three of the Herd’s lineup to start the game.
With one out on the board, senior Andi Williamson (Chapmanville Regional High School) walked three in the bottom half of the first inning. The Golden Hurricane’s Haley Henshaw earned a two-RBI single that gave her team an early 2-0 lead over Marshall.
The Herd continued struggling at the plate against Creger and defensively, committed an error that allowed a runner to score and another to advance into scoring position with two outs. Tulsa’s Samantha Cobb ripped a single into right center that scored the previously advanced runner, extending the Golden Hurricane lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the second.
The Herd went scoreless through another inning, while Tulsa capitalized on another Marshall two-out mistake with a double and home run to tackle on another four runs to the Tulsa lead, 8-0. Brittanie Fowler was substituted in for Williamson, and a fly out to left field ended the inning.
In the top of the fourth, senior Jazmine Valle (1-for-2) recorded the first and only Marshall hit of the game against the Golden Hurricane’s Creger.
The Herd’s defensive changes in the fourth left Tulsa scoreless, but the Golden Hurricane and Creger shut down the Herd with another 1-2-3 inning to end the game in the top of the fifth with the eight-run rule.
