Patriot Coal released a statement regarding the accident at the Kanawha Eagle Complex Wednesday evening. Asa Fitzpatrick, a 63 year old employee of Newtown Energy, Inc., was fatally injured when a piece of rock fell from the mine roof yesterday afternoon at Kanawha Eagle’s Peerless mine, located in Comfort, West Virginia.

“We express our deepest sympathies to Asa’s family, friends and co-workers,” said Michael D. Day, Patriot Executive Vice President – Operations. “We are fully cooperating with state and federal mine regulatory officials as we investigate this incident.”

The incident happened around 5:45 p.m. at the Newtown Energy, Inc. Peerless Mine in the Comfort Area. The mine is controlled by Patriot Coal Corporation and has a little more than 130 workers.
