A book release party for a local author, with America’s Got Talent winner Landau Murphy scheduled to attend, is set for Friday, March 15, at the offices of Robert Noone Legal Services (and Bucci, Bailey, Javins), 116 Stratton Street in downtown Logan, next to 317 Steakhouse, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m
Murphy is planning to attend the event to support his longtime friend, whom he affectionately calls “Ms. Cora Lee.”
“Way before most people heard me sing, Ms. Cora Lee was always there to support me and my dreams, and I’m so proud of her for writing and releasing her book,” said Murphy.
Cora L. Hairston is well-known in southern West Virginia as a musician, writer of more than 20 gospel songs, concerned child advocate and twenty-year veteran of the Logan County Improvement League.
Mrs. Hairston has also been a speaker at area schools during Black History Month, sharing and celebrating stories of and achievements by African Americans in U.S. history. Often, she performs a “Rosa Parks Portrayal.”
The long list of her accomplishments grows with the release of her debut novel, which has been described as a story told through the eyes of a coal miner’s daughter (on the black side).
Faces Behind the Dust traces the challenges, triumphs and tragedies of a young black woman’s coming of age in the southern West Virginia coalfields in the 1950’s and 1960’s, which was the end of segregation and dawning of the Civil Rights era.
Mrs. Hairston was inspired to write the book after a conversation at an Aracoma Alumni reunion in Columbus Ohio, where she vowed to write the story. It took over three years to research and complete.
Radiology Coordinator for Logan General Hospital, Mrs. Hairston retired after 30 years of service. After retirement, she owned and operated a nail salon and ladies boutique in Logan County.
Cora and husband Fred are the proud parents of four children, seven grandchildren, (one deceased) and four great-grandchildren. The Hairstons reside at Omar.
Faces Behind the Dust is available at Amazon.com in print and Kindle editions and other booksellers. She is currently working on the sequel to Faces Behind the Dust titled Hello world! Here Comes Claraby Rose! For more information, visit corasreadingcorner.com.
Mrs. Hairston will be signing copies of Faces Behind the Dust, giving a brief reading from the book and visiting with readers and friends during the event on March 15, which is free of charge and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
