During the week of March 12, students from the Advanced Security trade at the Carl D Perkins Job Corps visited Floyd County Head Start classrooms to give presentations as part of the schools’ “The World Is a Rainbow” diversity program. Each student discussed their backgrounds and ethnic origins with Head Start students for the school’s multi-culture week.

Perkins students Boris Mombo of Africa, Jose Figueroa of Puerto Rico, Elizabeth Lira of Mexico, and Jeannine Wilson of Trinidad and Tobago performed presentations and interacted with students. These presentations were designed for the pre-school students, using age appropriate visual prompts, with a collage of pictures and photographs showing, food, clothing, costumes, flags, and monies from their respective diverse backgrounds.

“This was so rewarding and an experience I will never forget,” Lira said of her time with one of the Head Start classes.

Mombo taught one class of children how to pronounce colors and numbers in French, concluding with the singing songs in French from his region of Africa. Figueroa and Lira worked with them counting to five and pronouncing colors in Spanish.

Wilson made bracelets for the students and discussed the culture of her native Trinidad and Tobago.

“I need to make more bracelets next time,” Wilson remarked.

Floyd County Supt. Henry Webb summarized the effect of the Perkins students with the Head Start program by saying, “Thanks. The students were saying the same thing: they really enjoyed yesterday’s (visit).”

Head Start teacher Liz Isaac wrote, “OMG … I just wanted to share with you that we LOVED the visit from the Job Corps. I ask them to come back and stay the day with us. They were wonderful.”

The Advanced Security students plan to return to the Head Start classrooms to conduct science activities and, in April, a bike safety program for the students.
