Heart of Appalachia Roller Derby, the Kanawha Valley’s newest women’s flat-track roller derby team, announces its second season with events in Madison, and a new home venue in Charleston.
On March 23, at 6:00pm, at the Madison Civic Center in Madison, West Virginia, Heart of Appalachia hosts the Jewel City Rollergirls of Huntington, in “Spring Careening.” Fifteen percent of ticket proceeds will go to the Ancient Mystic Order of Samaritans (AMOS Chemika #40), members of the Odd Fellows Lodges, which has earmarked its proceeds from ticket sales to aid a local teenager, Sandra Cox, who has recently been diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Concessions at the bout will be provided by the Danville Area Lions Club which will also donate to the AMOS endeavor.
Heart of Appalachia Roller Derby returns to the Kanawha Valley on April 20 with its first bout at its new home venue, the West Virginia National Guard’s Charleston Armory, where the ladies of H.A.R.D. take on the Appalachian Hell Betties of Athens, Ohio.
On May 18, Heart of Appalachia plays again at the Armory, with an opponent to be announced.
The team then goes out of town for several bouts: at Greenbrier Roller Vixens in Lewisburg on June 8, at Appalachian Hell Betties on June 22, and at Hard Knox in Knoxville, Tennessee on July 13, before returning to the Armory on August 3 to host a rematch with the Greenbrier Roller Vixens.
On August 24, the team presents the Third Annual Clash in the Coalfields at the Madison Civic Center in Madison, West Virginia. A multi-team scrimmage featuring skaters from many teams in several states, Clash in the Coalfields consists of skaters being split up into four different teams (Hatfields, McCoys, Pinkerton Guards, and Baldwin-Felts Agents), who play each other in three, half-hour periods, determining the ultimate winner of the Clash.
The team then wraps up its season away—across town—versus the Chemical Valley Rollergirls on September 7, and away at Gem City Rollergirls of Dayton, Ohio, on October 5.
