GOODY, Ky. – The Belfry Pirates split a pair of games on Saturday, defeating Boyd County 8-6, but dropping the second game to Prestonsburg 8-4 at the BHS field.

In the 3rd inning, with two out, Belfry’s Keaton Taylor reached first safely on an error by the center fielder Dylan Grimm. Taylor scored on a double by Reed Williamson RBI single to left. Zack Francisco then got a single to left field and Joey Duty smacked a double to right field to bring in two runs.

In the 5th inning Boyd County also scored with two outs Billy McCoy singled to left, Corey Harper singled to center and Robbie Shivel cracked a 2-run double to left.

The Pirate’s Taylor doubled to right in the 5th frame, followed by a single off the bat of Williamson. Taylor scored singled on an error by catcher Jacob Barnwell when he threw to third base. Zack Francisco then stroked a RBI double to center. Duty was hit by a pitch, then with two outs, Eli Huddle smacked a double down the third base line. Madison Ghormley reached on an error by shortstop Tanner Bryan and pinch hitter Jacob Francisco cracked an RBI single to left. The Pirates plated five runs in the inning, four of them earned.

Belfry used three pitchers in the 7th inning. Cameron Johnson, who had replaced Taylor, then he was replaced by Sean Hurley. He was then replaced by Dustin Jewell, who was able to get the final two outs, after Boyd County scored four runs.

In the second contest, Taylor got things started for the Pirates as he singled to center, then stole second base. Williamson singled to left, and then Zack Francisco reached on an error by shortstop Grant Anderson. Williamson scored on another Prestonsburg error by the catcher, Dalton Shepherd, which was a bad pick-off throw to third base.

Huddle then got a single to left for one RBI for Belfry.

In the 3rd inning, Shepherd singled to center for the Blackcats, then Asron Foley bunted a single down the third base line. J. D. Adams had a bunt single and loaded the bases. Grant Anderson then cracked an RBI single to left field and Trey Stapleton got another RBI single to left.

In the 4th inning, Prestonsburg’s Hunter Brown doubled to left, Jarin Hall walked, Adams had a single knocking in a run, and Brown scored on sacrifice by Shepherd. Adams also scored on an error by Z. Francisco.

In the Prestonsburg half of the 5th inning, Brown walked, Shepherd walked and Brown scored on an Adams bun. Then Anderson brought in a run with a single to left.

Belfry is scheduled to host district rival Phelps today, depending on the weather. They have a home game Thursday with Betsy Layne, and travel to Pikeville on Saturday.

Mingo Central drops doubleheader to Wayne

WAYNE – Mingo Central lost a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Wayne.

Alex Lee and Caleb Spencer each had hits for the Miners. The losing pitchers were Garth Simpkins and Matt Lester.
