CHAPMANVILLE — It was a Berry good performance by the Chapmanville Regional High School softball team on Saturday as the Class AA No. 3-ranked Lady Tigers won 4-2 over 3A Point Pleasant in the home opener at Chapmanville’s Ronnie Ooten Field.

Chapmanville improved to 2-1 on the season and bounced back from last Friday’s 8-2 loss at Sherman.

Senior pitcher Talya Berry pitched the complete game win for the Lady Tigers as she fired seven innings and allowed just two runs and two hits with nine strikeouts, three walks and a hit batter.

Chapmanville had six hits and didn’t commit an error in the field. Point Pleasant had three errors and all were costly.

The Lady Tigers plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead.

Caitlin Elkins led off with a single and Brandi Broom followed with a bunt single. First baseman Lauryn Easterling then moved the runners over to second and third with a sacrifice bunt.

Elkins scored on a Point error to make it 1-0.

Catcher Hanna Wooten walked and DH Emma Parris ripped a two-run, two-out single to left off Point Pleasant pitcher Kaci Riffle to put CRHS on top 3-0.

The Lady Tigers then made it 4-0 in the third as Berry singled and her courtesy runner Samarra Hurst scored on Wooten’s RBI double down the left field line.

In the top of the fifth, the Lady Knights cut the Chapmanville lead to 4-2 with Makinley Hissinbothan’s two-run double which bounced off the left centerfield fence on the fly.

Berry then settled down, getting Karissa Cochran to ground into an inning-ending fielder’s choice.

Berry then got the Lady Knights out one-two-three in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.

Easterling added a fifth-inning single for Chapmanville.

The Lady Tigers are scheduled to return to action at home against county rival Logan on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., weather permitting.

Chapmanville is then set to host Class AA defending state champion and regional opponent Wayne on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. CRHS goes to Scott on Thursday, to Herbert Hoover on Friday and then to 3A Lincoln County on Saturday afternoon.
