ALLEN - Betsy Layne notched its first win in the 2013 Kentucky high school baseball season on Friday, defeating visiting June Buchanan 17-7 in six innings.

The Bobcats, under the guidance of head coach Bryan Dixon, landed in the win column after dropping a season-opener to Pike County Central one week earlier. Pike County Central beat Betsy Layne 14-5 in an opener.

Senior Kannon Newsome and JT Hall led Betsy Layne to the win with three hits and three RBI apiece.

Dustin Tackett also delivered three RBI for the Bobcats.

James Frasure collected two hits for Betsy Layne in the non-district victory.

Betsy Layne plated its 17 runs on 12 hits. The Bobcats played well in the field, committing only one error.

After edging June Buchanan 3-2 in the opening inning, Betsy Layne plated four runs in its second plate appearance.

The Bobcats pushed across five runs in the sixth inning to force the game to end via the KHSAA 10-Run Mercy Rule.

Betsy Layne freshman pitcher Dustin Tackett worked 3.1 innings and registered five strikeouts for the Bobcats.

Newsome and Jonathan Brock also pitched for the Bobcats.

June Buchanan scored seven runs on five hits. The Crusaders committed five errors in the loss.

Eighth-grader pitcher Erric Sexton worked 5.1 innings and recorded 13 strikeouts for the June Buchanan baseball team. Sexton threw 19 first pitch strikes for the Crusaders.

Betsy Layne was visiting Belfry Thursday evening. The Betsy Layne-Belfry game ended too late to make this edition.
