RED JACKET – The Mingo Central track is making big strides – no pun intended – this spring.

Head coach Brad Webb has gone from having one runner to a full team this spring.

Senior Joe May, who qualified for the state tournament last year in the 100-meter dash, returns to lead the team.

A couple of other seniors, All-state basketball player Austin Banks, and Garth Simpkins have come out for the team. Junior speedsters Dakweon Willis and Joe Canterbury, along with freshman Deonte Joplin are also running for the Miners.

Junior Alex Lee will be in the broad jump and the high jump.

Freshmen Garrett Moore is also on Webb’s squad.

There are also some females on this year’s track team. Senior Chrissy Farmer, along with freshman Tori Varney and sophomores Amber Hensley and Sidney Smith.

“I am really excited that we have more people running this year. We have some very talented young people on the team,” Webb said. “With Joe May making it to state meet last year, it sparked an interest in others to participate.”

“I have practiced the team hard and I am eager for them to participate in the upcoming meets. I have a very positive team and they have put in a lot of hard work. They are excited to see where they stand against other competition out there,” Coach Webb added. “I have some strong senior leadership in Austin Banks, Chrissy Farmer and Joe May. It makes me feel good to know we are younger and have more depth this year so we can build on what promises to be a solid team for years to come.”
