PAINTSVILLE – As part of the ongoing Rural Roots Series, Appalachian Artists Inc. will present a night of bluegrass music with the return of the Appalachian Jubilee.

The Jubilee is scheduled to take place at the Historic Sipp Theater, Saturday, April 6, beginning at 7 p.m. The list of performers includes Bluegrass Riot, Black Powder Express, Hammertowne, and 5 Miles from Nowhere.

Bluegrass Riot, known for their traditional bluegrass sound, formed their band in 2009 with a guitar, a banjo, and a dream. Band members include Jared Goforth on banjo, Dustin Newsome on guitar and lead vocals, McKay Vanhoose on bass, Ernie Hurt on mandolin and vocals, and Jordan Spiegle on fiddle.

Black Powder Express, from Salyersville, originated from a few friends who would occasionally play music at the Magoffin County Muzzleloaders Club functions. AB Conley, president of the Muzzleloaders Club, gave the band its name after the hand-made black powder rifles that the members of the band shoot at Club events. The band is truly dedicated to the preservation of heritage and the history of bluegrass music as a whole. Members include: Toddie Preston, Chandler Allen, Jason Preston, Duane Prater and Andrea Preston.

Hammertowne, formed with members from Ashland, Lexington, and Louisa, was an instant connection. In most cases, much forethought, planning, and sometimes recruiting, goes into forming a musical unit, but not in this case. This group of musicians gathered in a studio as session players on a solo effort, and something special transpired. After the stop button had been hit on the first take of the first song, several seconds of complete silence filled the place, until finally from the control room came… “WOW.” The energy and musical compatibility was so strong, that it gave birth to a new group. Thus, Hammertowne was born. Members include Scott Tackett, Brent Pack, Chaston Carroll, Doug Burchett and Dave Carroll.

5 Miles from Nowhere, formed in early 1998 with the original members of Philip Ramey, Brett Ratliff, Aaron Davis, Matt Blanton, and Donald Caudill. They began performing regularly at the Paintsville Recreation Center, where they developed an enormous following. Not long after, they began to make a large amount of public appearances throughout the region with their new bass man, Donnie Witten, despite the loss of Matt Blanton. Since their start there has been a following of extraordinary success and the group plans to continue catering great bluegrass music to their fans for years to come.

Tickets for the Appalachian Jubilee are $10 and are available at Paintsville City Hall, (606) 789-2600

Participating sponsors of the Rural Roots Series include Appalachian Wireless, Citizens National Bank, Fairway Signs, Paintsville Tourism, and Ramada Inn.
